Getting Started – The Power of the Mind: “Yes, I can!”

THE POWER OF YOUR MIND AND YOUR BELIEFS.

Your beliefs can often impact on your state of happiness in your life. Limiting beliefs will always stop you taking any positive action. If you believe you can, you will often be able to find a way to fulfil that goal. But if you believe you can’t, then you are most likely to give up on your goal, even before you got started. Your mind is very powerful. Harness the power of your mind and direct it to positive goals and outcomes. Constantly tell your mind: “Yes, I can!” and see your limiting beliefs fly out of the window!

Many famous people have written a lot on how to channel your thinking into being positive rather than negative. You may have heard of the book
The Secret by Simon and Schuster, which wholly emphasizes the immense creative power that is within each of us – our ability to create our own world and make it exactly as we would like it to be, often by using the power of visualization – “If you can see it in your mind, you can have it in your life”.

I have always believed that I can achieve whatever I set my mind to, even though, I also realise that I must be realistic. Let us look briefly at setting realistic and achievable goals.

There are, for me, several important steps that you need to take in order to achieve your goal. Let’s look at some of them here.

1. WHAT DO YOU REALLY WANT? WHAT IS YOUR GOAL?
Choose what it is you really want. What would make you really happy?
It is impossible to achieve any goal, unless you have decided on what it is you really want to achieve in the end.
If for example, your goal is to become a nurse, or a teacher, or doctor, etc. The first thing to do would be to find out what qualifications you need to be able to apply to say, a Nursing School.

2. ARE YOU MENTALLY AND PHYSICALLY EQUIPPED FOR YOUR GOAL?
Do you have the ability and the means to achieve your goal? It is important to know your own strengths or innate abilities and work with them. You need to check within yourself – am I good at the Science subjects like Biology etc that are needed for a Nursing qualification? If your answer is no, then you are looking at the wrong goal. So, the wiser thing would be to select a career or a goal that gives you a buzz of happiness, whenever you think about it. For me, teaching others and seeing them imbibe the necessary knowledge that makes them succeed, is my own reward and my own motivator.

3. WHAT RESOURCES DO YOU NEED AND WHERE CAN YOU FIND THEM?
Find out the necessary Source of Knowledge for what you want to do. So, if you have discovered the career or your main goal, the next thing is to find out the necessary source of knowledge – a place you can go to learn what to do and how to do it. This can be a School, or a book or a Course or a Mentor – someone who can help you plan your course of action and give you the resources that you can tap into. Someone who can guide you and help you until you succeed. The Internet has a wealth of resources that you can explore until you find the right resources that you need. Parents, Friends, Teachers, Books, Coaches, Mentors etc are all valuable resources too. If you have set your mind on something, you can always find some resource to help you achieve that goal, as long as you are willing to stay motivated and dedicated in carrying out all the actions that are necessary.

4. TAKE ACTION – START WITH A PLAN.
Set realistic and achievable Goals within a time Scale. Plan your various steps from Step 1 to the end – when you would have achieved that goal.

The best way to achieve your main goal is to start by setting small achievable goals and making sure you achieve each goal before moving on to the next one. That way, you will feel successful and happy each time you have achieved one goal. That success will energize you into moving on positively to your next goal. So, it is important to break your goals down into manageable chunks, achieve each goal step by step , tick them off as achieved and then move own to your next small goal. Pat your self on the back with a little reward before moving on to the next small goal. This is your positive reinforcement. Positive reinforcement is vital as it increases your drive and enables you to feel good and positive about yourself. It helps to fire up your motivation and keep you going.

Next, we will look closely at your goal setting and how to get your actions off the ground.
